María Soledad Ramírez, ph.d.

Department of Biological Science
Assistant Professor

Dr. Maria Ramírez, a professor in the Department of Biological Science, is a researcher with more than 10 years of experience in molecular microbiology and clinical research. Dr. Ramírez' research focuses on the study and identification of antibiotic resistance mechanisms, their dissemination, evolution, as well as their impact in the morbidity and mortality of bacterial infections. She is also interested in the identification and categorization of previously unrecognized multidrug resistance pathogens that are seen today in clinical settings and also in the characterization of new emerging species. Phenotypic tests (which are the most widely used tools for identification in clinical laboratories) are not always appropriate to obtain a correct identification. As a result, her team is focused on developing molecular based- techniques to optimize the accurate identification of any new and emerging pathogens.
