Overview and Teaching
The Institute covers the broad field of information systems in research and education which emerged from the classical fields of databases and information retrieval. Starting in 1970, systematic research on computer applications by C.A. Zehnder led to database activities which generated a great deal of student interest. Since a decade, however, the amount of activity and breadth in this area has grown dramatically. As a result, members of the institute are now concerned with concepts from operating systems, programming languages, rule and knowledge processing, image and speech processing, computer graphics, and object-oriented software engineering. The information system of the future will be an integration of these several fields which are still separate today.

The main activities of the Institute lie in the areas of information modelling, document and information processing, knowledge-based systems, database systems and computer graphics. The five main research groups comprising the institute reflect these interests.
